Ocelots As Prey Items For Jaguars
Ocelot Kittens Make Zoo Debut

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear john,
The World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species is the leading
measure of global plant and animal conservation status. The Red List is updated
annually, and to remain useful, species are re-evaluated. The last evaluation contained
three changes for the Felidae family, and two of our fact sheets will be disappearing
off of our website when we update it with the new versions. Have a look before they're
gone!
The Chinese Desert Cat [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=5ewwracab&et=1104681309924&s=550&e=0013y8b62ZmaQljlaBrPpQzGrZNmbHL-FFpNSvS_BiQ2kQ745uxPbCJ4pvVfcue23ROtW26rZMA3cEnjk7qBNbOX4lutc0edJxYs74Oj1EHd9-l3Q34yU1wiVKirIgsVRi4qPlj3tgb6QdTeBPmSPHiNA==]has
been genetically identified as a sub-species of the Wildcat Felis silvestris, and
is now known as F.s.beiti.
The Iriomote Cat [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=5ewwracab&et=1104681309924&s=550&e=0013y8b62ZmaQlbs-y6-B2u73GH909em8m7h9m2w-U663UsV2nOrYYaHoovTGgiwwVmd0l46xmnRtdIdJTdX-S_IbJUjp3qkNkSw7SFlFnliyX3B-0iOZyHXFQGBKFnvhbCOdBs04HHRu4JOhZE9uodMg==]
has now been classified as a subspecies of the Leopard Cat Prionailurus bengalensis,
and is now identified as P.b. iriomotensis.
Our fact sheets on the website are only for species status, so to find these cats
in the future, you will have to check the Wildcat or Leopard Cat pages.
Two young ocelots born at the Berlin Zoo were shown off to media photographers in
their first major appearance.
Mother ocelots and their kittens have a close bond, but even in the wild, father
ocelots aren't involved in the care of their young. Ocelots are native to parts
of South and Central America, and their range extends into southern Texas, where
the Nature Conservancy is working to increase their territory by securing land previously
held by ranchers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ocelots As Prey Items of Jaguars in Costa Rica ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jaguars are opportunistic predators capable of killing and consuming almost any
type of prey. The list of species consumed is long and varies with geographic location
and availability. A total of 15 jaguar scats were collected during the wet season
by researchers in Las Tablas, a private protected zone in the Talamanca Mountains
of Costa Rica. They worked along trails previously identified as having permanent
presence of jaguars through camera trapping.

The collared peccary accounted for 56.3% of the scats analyzed, and the ocelot 31.3%
which were the majority of the contents and the only animal species found. Data
from follow up analyses in the area during the dry season found no ocelots in the
diet of jaguars.

Camera trapping data from previous studies in the area showed an interesting relationship
of activity patterns. The overlapping activity patterns between ocelot and jaguar
was significantly higher than with collared peccary. Other species previously reported
as important jaguar prey were found to overlap with jaguar activities, but were
not found in jaguar scat.

Small cats are rarely recorded in jaguar diet studies across the tropics and never
represented an important food item until now. Although these findings may be specific
to this type of habitat and season, it is also likely related to the high abundance
of ocelots in the area. In general, there was a low diversity of prey items found
to be consumed in this mountain ecosystem, despite the relatively high diversity
and abundance of potential prey species.

It is probable that the jaguar choose some of their prey based on relative abundance.
However, it is highly probably that there are some preferences in prey selection,
and that jaguars are not simply opportunistic hunters. This report represents a
new interesting observation for both species, and provides a new face for analyzing
sympatricity between these two felid species.

Fishing Cat Census

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear john,
This month`s Featured Feline is another of the subspecies of the wide-ranging Wildcat
Felis silvestris. Scientific classification of the Wildcat is always changing, but
the African range cats are always accepted as a subspecies, not a full species on
their own.
The African Wildcat Felis silvestris lybica is acknowledged as the ancestor of the
domestic cat line, and looks very similar to a long-legged tabby cat. Read more
WWF To Census Vanishing Fishing Cats
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At least one of the four cat species found in and around Calcutta is vanishing along
with the wetlands the animals thrive on.

Wildlife specialists have no clue about the population of the fast-disappearing
fishing cats, which have been spotted in the marshy areas on the city outskirts,
as well as the Sunderban swamps.

The World Wildlife Fund is funding a project to determine the population of fishing
cats, popularly known as baghrol or maachbagha, in Howrah and Hooghly areas.

Unlike in the protected areas of the Sunderbans, the cats living in close proximity
of humans in the two neighbouring districts of Calcutta are dying every day.

fishing cat Pessac Zoo"Fishing cats live in wetland areas as they feed mostly on
fish. Destruction of their natural habitat is the primary reason for their dwindling
count in Howrah and Hooghly," said Tiasha Adhya, the principal investigator of the
project.

Wetlands are shrinking in the two districts because of rapid industrialisation and
encroaching human settlements. Pollution, wood-cutting and fishing are also responsible
for the decline in their number.

The cats are also rampantly killed because depleting wetlands are forcing them to
prey on livestock as well as fish cultivated in ponds.

"Five fishing cats were killed in Howrah in three months," said Adhya. "There were
also reports of people killing the cats for their meat."

The nocturnal animals don't get soaked to the skin even when they enter water as
they have a double layer of fur. As they lack full claw sheaths, their claws are
partially visible even when retracted.

Listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, fishing
cats are "possibly extinct" in Pakistan and their presence in China and Malaysia
is uncertain.

Even in India - where the cat is included in Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection)
Act, 1972 and hence, protected from hunting - it is reported as "probably gone"
from Bharatpur in Rajasthan and the southern Western Ghats. Offenders under the
Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act can be imprisoned for up to three years and/or
fined up to Rs 25,000.

The World Wildlife Fund project will also suggest a conservation strategy that will
be implemented in association with the local community. The conservation plan will
probably include setting up of a fund for procurement of livestock preyed on by
fishing cats.

"Conservation is impossible unless the local community is involved in the process,"
said Adhya.

UP CLOSE AND RARE: JAGUARS IN THE WILDS OF BRAZIL:

"60 MINUTES" CAMERAS GET LUCKY AND CAPTURE

NATURE'S MOST ELUSIVE BIG CAT - SUNDAY ON CBS

Jaguar conservationist Alan Rabinowitz, who has made the animals his life's work,
has gone months without seeing one. A wildlife photographer known for his jaguar
pictures went three months with nothing but paw prints to shoot.
But when 60 MINUTES went to Brazil in search of the most elusive of all of nature's
big cats, they came out of the jungle on cue for their close-ups, one even swimming
by the film crew's boat - a sight never encountered by Rabinowitz over decades of
studying jaguars.
The result is a Bob Simon story that takes viewers as close as humanly possible
to the nocturnal cats in the jungles of Brazil that will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES,
Sunday, Jan. 30 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
"Even though this is the densest, highest concentration of jaguars matching any
place on earth, there's still a limited number of jaguars here," says Rabinowitz,
who has studied the animals for 30 years and is the CEO of a new conservation group,
Panthera. He tells Simon that 60 MINUTES will have to get lucky.
Jaguars in the wild are much more difficult to find than other big cats like lions
or tigers. Just ask nature photographer Steve Winter. "I spent the first three
months in the jungle and got a big fat zero...I felt like my career was over," he
says.
Simon and the crew went out on the Cuiaba River at night with Rabinowitz and Winter
and had no trouble getting wonderful, close-up shots of the jaguars - luck Rabinowitz
marveled at. "Look at her, God, she's beautiful, oh man and then she looks right
at you," he says. "This one was a great sighting."
And then Rabinowitz saw a sight he had never seen in all his years. A jaguar swimming
right by their boats. "That was spectacular. I've never seen that before. What
luck, what unbelievable luck, just as it's swimming across," he tells Simon. "There
was no fear there. There was just pure curiosity. Like, 'What are you guys bothering
me about?'" says Rabinowitz. The same jaguar stuck around to be videotaped again
as it watched the crew on their boats from the shoreline. "Look at that, it's just
sitting there on the mound, yes, just sitting there it's phenomenal," says Rabinowitz.

ISEC and its directors received a wealth of holiday cards and wishes in the past
few weeks, and in our opinion, the absolute winner was this gem received from the
Scottish Wildcat Association [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=5ewwracab&et=1104159894622&s=550&e=001en2QDB7VCWEF_hD0mAxV-Nlmqfc2f0EAnmDv379F_UCqO_2WbGVZEhkPzP4dvzPoqcnv_TRxA5XXkmD5emTJkfWS2JhUsQ3S2lEFD_iJvmI5-x7SFi4WjMddR2J6v6mAiMNMqmGYg6A=].
As well as rather typifying the attitude of these feisty little wild cats, you may
gather that not all of us here get in the ho-ho-ho spirit...

European Lynx On The Move
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eurasian Lynx to Be Transplanted to Poland
This February, the World Wildlife Fund will be transferring lynx from forests in
Estonia in an attempt to bolster the lynx population in Poland, where hunting and
habitat loss have reduced their number to about 200.
The Eurasian lynx, with a short body, long legs and large feet, is the third largest
predator in Europe (after the brown bear and wolf). It is also among the widest-ranging
of all cat species; lynx have a range that extends across Europe, central Asia,
Siberia and East Asia.
In Europe, however, there is now limited connectivity between subpopulations following
a population decline to as low as around 700 animals between 1930 and 1950.
Lynx are listed on the Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered
Species. Appendix II species are those that are not currently threatened with extinction
but may become so unless trade is closely controlled. While international trade
is forbidden, illegal hunting still represents a major threat. In Estonia, it is
estimated that over a hundred animals are hunted annually for their fur.
In Poland, lynx numbers have been decreasing dramatically during the past 20 years,
resulting in the listing of the species in the Polish Red Data Book of Animals in
1995.
"The lynx's survival is at stake in Poland. With the transfer of animals from Estonia,
we hope to repopulate the forests and prevent the species from extinction in the
country," said Pawel Sredzinski of the WWF's Poland Lynx Campaign.
Of the estimated 200 lynx in Poland, most live in the Carpathians. However, 60 inhabit
the Piska and Napiwodzko-Ramuckich forests, where the Estonian felines will be introduced.
Iberian Lynx Reintroduced To The Sierra Morena
Two Iberian lynx, both born in captivity, have been introduced into a reserve for
the first time since the breeding program began in 2005. They were released into
an area located close to the river at the Jaen Guarrizas, Sierra Morena.
The two females, Granadilla and Grazalema, were both born this year at the breeding
center near La Olivilla. At the time of their release both cats appeared nervous,
a condition that could have been put down to the dozens of people who were present
hoping to witness the historic occasion. They included representatives of the Ministry
of Environment , journalists and relatives of the owners of the farms where the
breeding was carried out.
Both animals are female but they will shortly be introduced to a male, Hail, who
was bred in the Sierra Morena in the town of Andujar Jaen. It is thought that he
will help facilitate the adaptation of the pair into the area. According to program
director, Miguel Angel Simón, the reserve in which the animals are now being kept
is an enclosure of four acres that has a population of seven rabbits per hectare.
A record will be kept of their movement using GPS collars which will also provide
a video surveillance system direct to an observatory located in the area.
Simón said that the three young lynxes will remain in the enclosure for a month
and a half, a period that will determine whether or not they can be self-sufficient
if released completely to the wild, or whether, by contrast, the must be returned
to the breeding center where they will be looked after.
The area chosen for the introduction of the lynx was selected because of its high
density of rabbits, the almost exclusive food of the Iberian lynx. In that area,
according to a survey from the Institute of Social Studies of Andalusia, ninety
percent of those involved in the scheme felt that the experience would be "positive",
as highlighted by the Minister for the Environment, José Juan Díaz Trillo who also
said that he appreciated the contribution of the scientific community, the staff
of the Life programme and the collaboration of the owners of the farms in the conservation
area.
